Not everyone is a potential client despite what some may think. Sure, go ahead, take on that client with deep pockets and let them suck the life right out of you, your people, and your business.
Been there and it’s not worth it.
Save yourself a lot of time, energy, and frustration.
Earlier this year I got a call from one of my consulting partners informing me of a conversation she had just had with a business owner who contacted her about media awareness and helping him get his message out about his business.
She informed him that she collaborates with my agency to which he replied (and I’m paraphrasing), “Yeah, I went to that site and it’s not what I’m looking for.”
Her interpretation upon hearing this from the business owner was that our message is wrong.
My response to that was, “I think we just saved ourselves a lot of time, energy, and frustration. Because of our message, I feel we just vetted out someone who’s not an ideal client.”
Just to be clear, there were a couple other red flags that my partner shared with me about her conversation with this business owner, which also lead me to this conclusion.
Attract the right people. Lead with clarity.
Having clarity in your message will attract the right people and push away the wrong ones. One of my main messages (that I’m sure pushed this potential client away) is, “Share Your Meaningful Work in a Meaningful Way.” Whatever the reason, it didn’t connect. I still slept well that night.
You might be struggling with your message and what you’re putting out there to attract the right people. Keep this in mind: Don’t lead with money, lead with clarity. Clarity in your message, clarity in how you want to work, and clarity in who you want to work with.
In the long run you will save yourself a lot of time, heartache, frustration and anxiety.
As a result, you will become happier, more motivated and excited about your work, those you work with, and the difference you’re making in the world.
What’s working for you? Is your “clear” message attracting the right people?
